In 2019, we launched the Grounds 4 Nature Bioblitz to encourage school children from Year 1 to 13 to engage with nature in their school grounds.
We are now launching a new project, Clean-up 4 Nature, looking at litter in school grounds and how it affects the plants and animals in the area.
We are encouraging schools to take part in half-termly litter picks, linking this to the animals that interact with the litter and how it affects the vegetation.
We are asking schools to carry out a short guided habitat survey of the area, using Seek by iNaturalist to help them identify any plants, then collect litter and check for any small animals living in it or signs of larger animals feeding on it.
We will also be putting up camera traps to watch the animals visiting the school grounds to interact with the rubbish.
We will also be encouraging schools to interact with their local communities, councils, and shops, to encourage them to take action to reduce litter and help nature.
